A couple of suntan related links today. First there's research in Japan that suggest you only need to "see" the sun to trigger an all-over tan. Hiramoto and colleague Masayasu Inoue dressed half of a group of 30 mice in aluminium foil suits with holes for their eyes.

Meanwhile, in France, they are working to protect your skin from the ravages of sun. They are developing a sun "goop" utilizing heat-loving bacteria from deep-sea vents...including enzymes that are particularly effective at mopping up a variety of highly reactive chemical complexes called free radicals, such as negatively charged superoxide anions (O2-).
