I'm not sure how I got into this web thread, but I ended up running across a www.stalkingthewild.com website (magazine coming) and an interesting article about Why not Bugs? (that is, why not EAT bugs).
When we were kids we tried chocolate covered ants and also some roasted grasshoppers, which should have been labelled scorched to carbon grasshoppers, both from the gourmet food section of a nearby grocery store. I seem to remember the gourmet food sections back then being really bizarre, but perhaps the memory is tainted by what an eleven year old considers edible. More recently I've had escargot (snails, yummy!) and there's the odd, small caterpillar that gets inadvertantly cooked in with some garden produce and doesn't taste all that bad. Otherwise I really don't spend much time thinking whether the things running/crawling around the yard might go good tossed in a salad or toasted for pasta sprinkles. The line in the article, Earthworms also make a very nice smooth pate, didn't trigger the most appetizing images I can imagine.
