The top "black & white" photo is a happy accident. It was a shot of the moth much like the bottom one but with a hotter spot around the head. While trying to adjust the levels in photoshop I accidentally bumped a handle too far and the whole background just disappeared!
A little tweaking and a change to greyscale brought out the image you see.
The color one is interesting too but in more subtle ways.
I was quite surprised that the moth stayed put during all of the jiggling and wiggling it took to take these shots. Then again it was probablly self-defense, I saw dozens of these guys being chomped by birds in the Russian Maple trees in our front yard.
