"Hey, was that you?"

~crunch...crunch....crunch~

Walking into work at five in the morning is not a visual experience.

If that's Zeke up ahead what's back there?

Leaves whisper, trees sigh, water snickers, and somehow the dog barely makes a sound.

The glow from a porch light renders invisible dog into forty foot apparition slithering across road and through trees. Then he's back in darkness and anonymity. The low whine of distant interstate traffic leaks over hills and through defoliated trees.

It's all snuffling and sniffing for Zeke, he'd be just as happy blindfolded. A mile into the trek my sinuses open up and a wash of fresh forest breaks through. Composting leaves, sappy pine, strawberry tinted cedar, and the fat, round smell of mushrooms.

Two miles and we cut through the woods, still difficult to make out details of the path. I skirt obvious puddles but leaves camouflage shallow water rivulets and the thick mud traps that suck shoes right off of feet. Zeke struts by oblivious, paws making a happy splip, splip, splip in passing.

Probably should worry about hunters, the two of us look like misshapen black bears or New York deer all dressed in black. Instead I whistle Wilco's I Am Trying To Break Your Heart and try to keep my shoes on.

Yeah, daylight savings time didn't seem to "take" this year. Been waking up between four and five most mornings.

Daylight savings did too take! You were waking up between 4 and 5 before daylight savings. And now, you wake up between 4 and 5. Otherwise you'd be waking up between 3 & 4.
