Born in another time and place I would endeavor to be a clockmaker. There's something intriguing about mechanical precision in miniature thrown into restrained, calculated motion to struggle against the will and whimsy of atmosphere, magnetics, gravity, and the owner.
The timepiece here is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos:
Through the unique concept of a quasi-perpetual movement, in perfect harmony with nature, the Atmos truly lives on air. Gently lulled by the subtle nuances of air, the Atmos, created in 1928, draws its energy from the slightest variations in temperature ; a fluctuation of only one degree is sufficient for two days' operation.
Quite precious. See that spiraling outer band? That marks the progression of time from year 2000 to year 3000. No word on what happens when the 1000 years have passed. More info along with background information and other models.
You only see that kind of a scene once in a blue moon.
