I've been enjoying the low-light photos over at no traces and thought I'd give it a try. Let me tell ya, I think you need SOME light in order to make the photos interesting. We've had a long string of cloudy nights and the reflected glow from the car dealerships isn't all that interesting.
Finally got a break in the weather. No moon, but plenty of stars and some reflected city light off of the clouds. I started off with a low ISO and long exposures, but while the photos were interesting the star trails came out too long and looked distracting. Bumped the ISO up to 1000 and got the photo above.
D70, 62 secs, f/4.0, ISO 1000, 12.0mm
In Photoshop I cropped one corner. Used healing wand to remove a distracting bit of our vinyl sided house and the glow from a neighbor's house light. Tweaked the curve a bit and then did a little overlay blending to enhance the contrast. The blurred clouds are part of the original.
The clouds silhouetting the trees really looks good in this photo. I agree with your choice of exposure time, I find star trails a bit distracting also...the stars here look just right.
Looks like albino aurora!
Nice shot! I have to do this as well but currently it's too cold outside ;)
This is lovely :)
another brilliant shot.
