Macro Monday
Fly Cleaning Sluggish Slug Silver Dollar

I made a softbox this weekend. Foam-board, thin white curtain lining cloth, and a bunch of fluorescent bulbs in clamp lamp fixtures. I'll have to document it at some point after the bugs have been worked out.

Speaking of bugs...since the box can be sealed (camera slips through hole in cloth) I decided to try a macro shot of a fly. Catching a fly in our house this time of year is NO problem. I tossed it into the soft box and zzzip, it flew straight to the top.

The box is constructed to allow light to come in from the sides and the top, with the subject on the bottom...well lit. I hadn't taken into account that the subject would prefer to hang upside down. In hindsight I should have rotated the box 180°. Instead I got underexposed fly photos despite using a box bathed in light.

The slug was making its way across our snowy driveway. Despite the icy cold it didn't seem any more sluggish than usual. Every few inches it would stop, retract its "head" inside its body (these are the kinds of things they don't tell you in school), think for a moment or thaw out brain, and then pop it out and proceed.
