Another shot from this weekend's micro fun. This is a small part of a very small Coleus blossom. If you've ever seen a mint plant blossom it's pretty much the same; a tall spike covered in minature flowers. Each flower is smaller than a house fly.
Until this weekend I had no idea that there'd be a pistil and stamen, although it makes sense that there are, and that on these teeny tiny, microscopic reproductive organs there be even smaller microspores of pollen. What pollinates such a plant? Fruit flies? A Bee's sneeze?
On a humorous side-note. I run google ads on The How Zone and typically they are spot on with ads related to the topic on the page. On the last page of the micro photos article there's a photo of blue cheese mold and I mention maybe starting up a few petri dishes of mold to photograph.
I'm pretty sure this Target ad isn't talking about the same thing. Right?
