Approach Take-off

Two more shots from the California trip.

I really like photographing the shore birds. They have interesting names too: snipes, godwits, plover, turnstones, curlews, yellowlegs, sandpipers, and phalaropes.

This group skitters in and out with the waves, trying to pluck tasty crustaceans from beneath the sandy surface. When they need a break they stop somewhere just at the edge of the wave line, tuck a leg up into their downy bellies, and snag a few winks. If the water, or people, starting getting too close they'll to hop a few feet, trying not to unfold the leg.

Wonderful photographs and commentary - I really like the soft DOF on the first, well done.

Willets! Love 'em. You are making me want to go to the beach.

I like the backlight and the narrow DOF of the first one: places the viewer at the place of the birds giving an original perspective to the scene.
