Two days ago I noticed a heron taking flight from our neighbor's place...which is odd since the only water over there is the family swimming pool. Seeing it that close to our pond makes me nervous.
On the walk to work yesterday Zeke and I spook a heron at a pond about a quarter mile from the house. It rose on billowy wings, stirred air with measured flaps and casually made its way upstream and out of sight.
A mile and a half later, no body of water nearby, I noticed a large bird circling overhead to land. We stopped and watched as a heron surveyed the landscape, decided on a perch of dead branches, and converted large wings into parachutes to slow and balance the landing.
Now it is the next morning and I'm at the office, sipping a cup of coffee and writing a quick log entry about heron. There's a movement out the window, down by the river.
Another heron.
Maybe they are trying to get their territories straightened out. After all, with Spike around, there's a bit less territory than you'd think.
