This is Sunspot 798 which just swung into view a couple days ago and has been spewing all kinds of solar flares with more expected. And, of course, this is our cat Tink whom I am pretty sure has something to do with it.
Birgit Kremer of Spain captured a remarkable closeup of the sunspot activity. I used a solar filter on the telescope to take this photo with the D70 attached through a 1.4 teleconverter. That's all the magnification I can get with that particular setup. I'll try another rig today that pairs the D70 with existing eyepieces and try for a closer view.
Good chance of aurora already and they are predicting a high likelihood of more solar flares from 798, possibly disrupting satellite communications. If you want to see the sunspot try this safe viewing technique. Or come on over to our house.
Good shot.
We are crossing our fingers because last time we had a solar storm we lost a few days of observations when we had to shut down our space telescope (Spitzer). And we are supposed to be at solar minimum...
