Still trying to identify this bird. It was sitting in a tree near the botanical gardens outside of Mendocino, California and I kept the zoom lens trained on it until it took off. The tree was sitting in a field of sorts, so I suspect that it was waiting for small prey.

Update: It might be an Osprey.
