After seeing this photo and this photo I wondered if the cop was using some kind of laser to check people's temperature without touching them. Sure enough, you can buy a laser thermometer for about a hundred bucks.

You can do much more than check someone for a fever, it measures temperatures from -18 to 275°C (0 to 525°F) at a distance of up to four feet. While not as visually satisfying as thermal imaging you might be able to use it to scan the outside of your house for heat leaks on a cold night (or cold leaks on a hot night?). Maybe you could point it down the back of an animal's throat to measure their temperature instead of, well, you know.

Life on a stick...

You don't find it to be an interesting glimpse into the complex and strange world of insects?

I count three varieties of oozing/crawling things.

Got it...loud and clear.

So much for my grand plans to create an all bug photo weblog!

The BugLog sounds great! I got a great shot of a tick the other day... ;-)

I was complaining last week about the ponderous english sections on the French audio language "tapes" I listen to. Yesterday I remembered that iTunes has a feature to adjust the starting or ending point of a track. Hmm, you don't suppose those Apple engineers actually use this information on the iPod too?

Sure enough. Highlight a track in iTunes, get info (Cmd-I), select Options tab, and adjust the start or end time (too bad you can't scrub to the right location, eh?). Sync the iPod. Now only the selected portion of the track plays. Of course you can use the iPod controls to force it to play the skipped section if you like. Good for editing out bad jokes on an otherwise great live track. Le bon travail Apple!
