Hop over to our weather page, scroll to the bottom, and you'll see that we are in for an almost perfect night of star gazing. We've been waiting all summer for this.
While setting up the telescope I noticed the moon just hanging there looking like a faint, half eaten blue pizza. Since I didn't have a 400mm lens like Chris used (or a D100) I snapped a quick shot through the telescope. The first image is raw, without any photoshop manipulation other than a size reduction. The next image is the same photo with contrast, brightness, sharpening and about every other bit of manipulation I could throw at it.
Finally, a shot taken after dark. Resized in PS with a little sharpening on the way.
Via Flutterby I ran across the cross-country bike journal of Joe & Susan Bousquet. Turns out they went through Wyoming around the same time I was visiting. I probably drove past them on my way home, albeit not at as enjoyable a pace as theirs.
I noticed another fellow packed a Jetboil. He'd probably love the new French Press accessory.
There's something about seeing the moon directly, and taking your own photos that makes them extra-special.
You are right. No matter how many photos and posters you've seen of the moon nothing beats looking at it through the telescope.
And man is it bright!
