You'd think after living in New Hampshire for a dozen years I'd have figured things out. Yet it still isn't obvious to me: is it legal to drive over pedestrians in crosswalks? Encouraged? You wouldn't know by watching.
Maybe it's an accepted battle of the wills, survival of the meanest, between a driver who might lose valuable seconds by slowing down, and a pedestrian who has neither the bulk or nerve to claim any right to being in the road. Perhaps pedestrians should give off a magnetic field? When they are too close to a moving vehicle the magnetic field triggers an ink capsule built into the car's steering wheel. The spaced out or inconsiderate driver spends the next day with "Doofus" written on their forehead in bright green ink.
