Since being given a year to live, back in 1987, Randolph Westphal has biked over 65,000 miles.

Westphal receives about one hundred eighty dollars a month from his sponsors, Jack Wolfskin Clothing and Biria Bike Company, and says that is enough to meet his expenses, especially with the help of places like Best Western hotels, where he is allowed to stay free.

"The last 15 years, I'm either on the road or in the hospital," Westphal acknowledged. "You can't have a family this way."

For now, Westphal's travel companion is Yukon, a 6-year-old malamute named for the Yukon River, which Westphal has seen in his travels. Yukon runs alongside Westphal and rides in a carrier attached to the bike when he gets tired.
