Morning Commute

Sunrise

5:35am
Internal alarm clock goes off...brappppppp...
5:45am
Let the dog out, feed cat, dress.
5:50am
Double check temperature (45!?), put on light jacket, toss laptop and WinCE book in backpack. Shoulder backpack and head out the door, Zeke eagerly follows.
5:55am
Walk by the neighbors. I see Bill is heading inside after walking his dog. Zeke smells out a message by the mailbox. P-Mail.
6:00am
All is quiet save for woodpeckers trying to drum up mates. Tympanic trees, TV aerials, and tin rooftops are on this morning's instrument list.
6:03am
PI, the beagle, is outside and hiding quietly behind a stone wall. He's a bit of a runt and is careful with whom he associates. Zeke heads over to assess the situation, they sniff the essentials and take turns decorating a nearby rock.
6:15am
Zeke calls for a vote on the Farnum Hill trail. 1-1 tie. Jerry overrules, some excuse about new sneakers.
6:25am
BOOM! We must have missed the exact signal but all of the birds are now up and in full song. Robins are hopping along the road while a woodpecker Jack DeJohnettes a yagi antenna.
6:30am
Another vote, this time on the King's Grant woods shortcut. Zeke wins 2-1. Jerry isn't sure where the extra vote came from. The drone of morning interstate traffic picks up.
6:40am
The shortcut isn't too muddy, there is even a bit of hardpack snow left behind. Zeke catches a scent and is off full steam into the woods.
6:45am
Emerging from the woods and into King's Grant we are verbally chastised by a poodle derivative. Zeke ignores it completely. Dogs barking on TV have higher status.
6:50am
A lone jogger passes us and for a few moments Zeke is running alongside. My imagination jumps to Zeke finding himself accidentally living with a family of avid joggers.
6:53am
Arrive at office. Time for dog biscuits and espresso.

Hey! Watch those cracks about poodles. There are those us us who think they're about the best dog there is! :-)
Here's mine from the Seventies:
