Micrel makes this low cost, low power line of wireless radio rx/tx chips called QuickRadio. Only three external parts needed and the best feature is the chips self tune to the antenna. A few bucks for the chips with data rates starting at 2kbps. You could make your own remote control fobs or collect remote sensor data.
