Looking Up

Moon

The moon last night and, below, the sunspots as of yesterday afternoon. Don't forget to glance outside off and on throughout the night. Possibility of Aurora. If I see some I'll make a post here. Better yet, go for a walk down a dark street. It takes a while for the eyes to acclimate to the dark and that makes a big difference when trying to spot fleeting aurora. There was a spectacular show last year, yet it took a while to trust my eyes that the sky was "moving."

The other night I watched a documentary on The Very Large Telescope project. The telescopes, four 8 meter telescopes, are in place on a Chilean desert mountain top. Sometime next year they plan to have the The Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) working, which ties the four lenses into one big ol' lens. Resolution wise it will enable them to, for example, watch a man walk across the surface of the moon.
