Reminds me of the X-Files show where mold grew all over people. It was spread by these two brothers (accidentally), but could kill a store clerk in minutes of them passing down an aisle.
Other than that, it's not dog fur, since he's just sooooooo black.
Keeping with the animal idea here, it could be cat belly fur. She does have a white "udder" belly.
