Lovely Lair
Lovely Lair

I'm starting to learn and experiment with the SB-600 flash for the D70. This macro was taken outside with late afternoon sun and the flash mounted on the camera. Settings: 1/60sec, f/25, ISO200, 280mm focal length (w/diopter).

I'm amazed at how well it worked. The spider was constantly moving (eating a black fly near as I can tell...yay!) and there was a light breeze causing the flower to sway.

The SB-600 and it's more powerful sibling the SB-800 have a wireless flash mode, which lets you set the flash up elsewhere (no cables) and the D70 will trigger it using a brief pulse from its built in flash. The SB-800 has a mode where it can control the D70 and multiple SB-600's. A tail-wagging-the-dog trick where the SB-800 triggers the D70 and all of the other flash units.

To date I've been relying mostly on sunlight or my lightbox to provide lighting, with mixed results. I've always associated flash with horribly overexposed family photos so it should be fun to learn the right way to use it.

Update: I was showing the flash to my friend Brian and, nice guy that I am, tried to zap him with a remote trigger while he was looking at it. Almost. ":^)
