Fly Eye Geometry
Fly Eye Geometry

There's sort of a funny story behind this. I was in the yard a couple weeks ago experimenting with the macro lens and a flash. I hauled the camera and tripod around the yard in search of small things to photograph. While trying to frame a dandelion I noticed a pair of flies bouncing around on a sapling nearby.

I was using the flash off-camera for a better angle of lighting. How this works is that the D70 sends out a "commander" pulse using its built-in flash. The SB600 flash picks this up and then fires shortly afterwards. The fly jumped each time the first pulse went off, which meant by the time the real flash fired and the shutter opened the fly was either in motion or in a slightly different spot and out of focus.

I figured that after a few shots it would get used to it (or fly away). No, it got re-startled each time. Something like:

*blip*
"Yikes! What was that?"

*blip*
"Yikes! What was that?"

*blip*
"Yikes! What was that?"

*blip*
"Yikes! What was that?"

. . .
