It was May of last year (the 25th to be precise) while sitting pond side watching the quiet New Hampshire sky fade to twilight that a UFB (unidentified flying bug) made a series of low level landing maneuvers and plopped into the pond before my astonished eyes. Laura suggested that it might have been a Toe Biter, which sounded about right but was still idle speculation.
No more. While cleaning the pond this weekend and trying to get the pump going I pulled out the skimmer basket and found "the beast." This is a Toe Biter and it's about 3-4 inches in length. It quickly scurried away, as best as something might be expected to scurry with legs on its mouth. I eventually picked it up and tossed it back into the pond.
Yeah, I'll probably regret that.
