After a feeding we'll rest Zane's chin between thumb and forefinger, lean him forward a tad bit, and gently play his back like a bongo to elicit a melodic burp or two. Oddly enough he seems to enjoy it.
This shows his blond hair. Towards the back it is darker and longer. If you follow the line of his forehead upwards you'll note a sudden change in skull elevation. Baby heads consist of five continents at birth, being something of a tectonic event, can cause them to overlap. The spaces between continents are the sutures and where they all meet are called fontanelle, sort of like the UN of baby heads. If all goes well we'll be able to re-inflate his head as the sutures gradually harden for good. Failing that he'll have no problem being a Klingon extra on Star Trek.
Zane's feeding quantity has been ramping up, starting sometime Friday night. He was born at 6 lbs 14 oz and then dropped about ten ounces by the time he checked out (normally happens). On his first Dr.'s appointment yesterday morning they were happy to see that he'd all but gained the lost weight. The Dr. also diagnosed that he's a nice, quiet baby and officially cute. ":^)
I picked up a new stroller yesterday, one which was adjustable for newborns and can hold a car seat, and then rushed home to put it together and take him for his first walk. It's been damp and cool with pretty regular light rain for the last week. Undeterred I threw a rain jacket over the front the cover what the stroller's sun/rain shield left exposed and we headed out.
He's not quite up to looking around at the scenery, even without a rain jacket blocking the view, so I'll just have to assume that he appreciated the fresh crisp air, gentle bird melodies, and rumble of asphalt under the wheels of his coach.
The photo was shot in the new family room (I was giving him the tour) alongside the west window for natural illumination. Grandpa Henricksen sent up an old, manual control 50mm f1.4 lens which I've been using for the past couple of shots. It is a really fast lens, giving photos a precise depth of focus and pleasing bokeh (the out-of-focus part).
Ahem - slacker friend checking in. Jerry, the Snuggli(s) was/were sent late last week (maybe Fri? - whatever, it was post-birth, which you predicted) to your office. You will find these invaluable for walking out with the wee one. Not to mention strapping the little bugger on so you have two hands free to load the dishwasher. Any port in a storm, as new parents are wont to say.
