Book talk

Uncle Jerry?

uh huh

You know what my favorite book is?  I mean the favorite one that Mom read to me?

nope

Lord of the Rings

great books, did you read the first one, The Hobbit?

Actualy the Hobbit isn't part of them.  You can read all of the Lord of the Rings books without reading it.

oh, right

It's really a completely different story

uh huh

(Am I the only person on the planet who thinks of them all as one big series?)

The Hobbit is the prologue to the Lord of the Rings. Perhaps its the longest, most detailed prologue ever writen.
It serves this purpose perfectly. It sets up all the main characters, and creates the world in which the epic story took place. If you watch the movie, they needed to come up with a fabricated prologue to immerse the viewer in the tale, since they didnt have the tale of the Hobbit to do that.
