Here's an interesting project to capture movies of meteors. The software they use requires a specific frame grabber card (~0) so it can perform complex analysis of the video to detect and record meteors and ignore the rest.

If you don't need this kind of precision you could just feed the video into a DVR (digital video recorder) like Tivo, ReplayTV, or eyeTV and "browse" the previous night's meteors using the FFWD feature. Now that I think about it you could hook an outside camera feed into a DVR and jerryrig one of those motion detectors to not only turn on a light, but to "fake" the DVR remote into pressing RECORD.
