In going through a pile of images from our weekend walk in the woods I ran across this and was a bit perplexed. Then I remembered: beaver dam. We came across a beaver dam and den. Off to the side of the den, maybe eight feet away, was a heavily travelled section of snow leading into a hole. Was it a tunnel to the den? Access to the water? Food cache? I set the camera on timer mode (10 seconds) and carefully lowered it into the dark chasm by the wrist strap. *SNAP* Three shots and three angles, but none show more than a hollowed out chamber, stringy with the business end of roots. I was hoping for the glowing eyes of a beaver brood or at the least an intricate tunnel system. It's times like these I want motorized wheels and a remote control for my camera.
